Thomas A. Edison Grammar School opened in the fall of 1925. The school was named for Thomas Alva Edison, a famous American inventor, who had a home and laboratory in Fort Myers, Florida. He was said to have spent a great deal of time in the Tampa Bay area. Mr. Edison patented many inventions, most notably, the incandescent electric light bulb. Edison Demographics:
The East Tampa community is sending children to Edison Elementary as well as other schools in Hillsborough County representing the best of the community. According to Great Schools most recent data, Edison "is rated below average in school quality compared to other schools in the state. Students perform below average on state tests, are making below average year-over-year academic improvement, and has below average results in how well it’s serving disadvantaged students."
The percentage of students on free or reduced lunch is 98%, a key factor leading to poor school performance and a direct indicator of how the East Tampa community is performing as a whole. School performance is directly correlated to both the economic performance (small business and home ownership) and internal and external community relations.
